Great Scripts, Less Filling

In between classes, I’m going to be reading some of the best scripts of the last decade, as designated by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, as well as the Writer’s Guild of America. The scripts will be (though not in this order):
The Hours – 2003
Lost in Translation – 2004
American Splendor – 2004
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – 2005
Sideways – 2005
Crash – 2006
Brokeback Mountain – 2006
Little Miss Sunshine – 2007
The Departed – 2007
Juno – 2008
No Country for Old Men – 2008
Milk – 2009
Slumdog Millionaire – 2009
The Hurt Locker – 2010
Up in the Air – 2010
The Social Network – 2011
Inception – 2011
After each script, I’ll evaluate them based on the following rubric:

1.Identify the 8 Points of the story: Stasis, Trigger, The Quest, Surprise, Critical Choice, Climax, Reversal, Resolution

2. What is the pacing of the script?

3. Identify the Main Character’s arch(s)

4. Who is this script written for?

5. Does the action and description line writing seem unique?

6. Are there interesting writing elements? (flashbacks, conversations, intricate cuts)

7. How does the location/design/exterior elements play into the screenplay or story?

8. How are character traits revealed to us?
So, the first one I’ll be reading is Lost in Translation by Sofia Coppola, followed next week by American Splendor (Robert Pulcini and Sarah Springer Berman), and one of my favorite films, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by Charlie Kaufman.
